Date Night

We've been exchanging babysitting with another family in our ward. Friday night was our turn to go out. And we had the best plan: Head into DC and walk the monuments and memorials at night. After almost a year here, we haven't done that yet, if you can believe it.

When it started to rain, we gave each other a look. "But won't it be an adventure?" I ask. The closer we got to DC, the harder the rain was falling. Even with the wipers at full speed, we could barely see the road in front of us. Cars were pulled off to the side, waiting out the storm. CRASH! Lightening flashed across the sky. The Emergency Broadcast System interrupted our music. And it wasn't a test!

"A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for the Washington area until 8:50 PM. A tornado watch is in effect in Prince Georges county . . ."

Seriously? I thought we were through with that when we left Missouri. The sky hadn't gone tornado-green on us, so we weren't worried. But we did decide that maybe a visit to the outdoor monuments might be better enjoyed at another time.

To brook our disappointment, we meandered home any which way,

chatted about the world's problems, and stopped at a few "Scenic Overlooks" along the Potomac.

A quick stop-off at McDonalds for an ice-cream cone (I didn't have enough points for Cold Stone), and we headed home. Kids were asleep in bed, so I threw down the gauntlet and challenged Rick in Mario Karts.

Fabulous date! Not what we planned, but still a good time. I love date night!

  1. I am glad you two found a silver lining!!!!! It's good to know the Emergency Broadcast System works, and not just for those annoying tests!

  3. Love the pics too. So beautiful seeing the Potomac. Definitely nice to have an evening out. We don't get those much at all. Any date that ends with soft serve is a good one in my opinion. :)

  4. I always said that flexibility is what is needed in a relationship/date...in more than one sense of the word!
